Understanding Emptiness
For many young adults, emptiness feels like isolation or lack of purpose, leading to distractions or numbing behaviors. Capitalism exploits this void, offering products as empty fixes. Yet, in some cultures, emptiness is seen as a space for peace and growth. Soul Magazine aims to help 20-25-year-olds, especially those impacted by the pandemic, reframe emptiness as an opportunity for self-discovery.
Our Purpose
We believe the empty space is full of life. By challenging the fear and negativity often associated with emptiness, we hope to reveal the endless possibilities it holds; a bridge between soullessness and soulfulness. Emptiness, rather than a void, is an open invitation to explore creativity, connection, and hope.
The Visual Identity of Soul Magazine
Typography
The fonts balance simplicity and depth. CASA Regular sets a neutral starting point, while TUPPENCE Bold adds weight and purpose. For body text, Helvetica Neue ensures clarity, while the expressive Swear Display family reflects the complexity of emotions tied to emptiness. Together, they create an intentional, dynamic layout.
Color Palette
The color scheme evolves with the narrative. Beginning with greyscale tones to represent neutrality, the palette shifts to vibrant primary colors (yellow, red, and blue) symbolizing joy and transformation. This progression mirrors emptiness evolving into beauty.
Graphic Elements
Design elements use space to convey change. Grids balance openness and density, while gradients symbolize transitions. Playful disruptions in layout surprise and engage readers, encouraging them to experience emptiness in new ways.
